FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s plan to sell 20% of the World Cup’s commercial rights has been definitively withdrawn.
The project, with an estimated value of around 3.65 billion euros, would be carried out through a structure called the “FIFA Forward Enterprise”.
The initiative was abandoned after strong opposition from UEFA, CONCACAF and FIFA’s main sponsors. Meanwhile, a report in the British newspaper The Times claims that Infantino would receive a salary of 30 million euros per year, plus bonuses.
This amount is much higher than the current salary of around 3 million euros per year. The project envisaged approval through a vote of the 211 FIFA member federations.
Despite the controversy and pressure created, Gianni Infantino has refused to resign and continues to lead FIFA.
